Fall Swing Schedule

A few of our first meeting dates have been arranged for the Fall semester! All of our meeting times that we have set in stone will be published on the top right side of this blog.

For the next meetings, we will be practicing at 8pm in the Beta/Gamma Commons. This building is located amongst the Gamma dorms, with Stadium Drive on one side and the Engineering building parking lot on the other. On this map, it is labeled #50.

Any students who are interested in learning how to swing dance are invited to join us! No prior dance experience is necessary. If you have any questions, you can either respond below in the comments or email Rebecca at USAswing@gmail.com

Summer Swing

For the summer of 2010, the USA Swing Dance club will be hosting swing lessons on Wednesday nights at 6:30pm in the student center ballroom.

Our first lesson was last week and we started out with the basics since everyone was new. Before we even began dancing with a partner, we practiced with some tension and lead exercises. Here is a clip with Daniel showing a sample of what we practiced on June 2nd.

(please note that at 2:17, Daniel gives the lead reversed.)

Here's a peek at what we'll be learning next week!

Do I Need to Bring a Partner?

The short answer is no, you do not need to bring a partner to meetings or dances. Everyone is going to dance with everyone else in the end, so even if you did come with someone, chances are you will only dance with them for a portion of the time.

However, it is helpful to bring a friend of the opposite sex.

At the meetings in particular, there tends to be more ladies than there are gentlemen! If you can encourage your male friends to come and dance, everyone would be grateful.

Don't be afraid to dance with a stranger. It's a ton of fun!

Where is the HPLES building?

This is a question that a lot of student have emailed me about. The HPLES building is the official name of the PE building and is located adjacent to the Rec Center. The entrance closest to the dance studio faces Jaguar Drive. You can check out this official USA map to see what I'm talking about. The HPLES building is #56.

The dance studio is on the right side of the hall, directly after the vending machines. It is right before the new corridor on the right that leads to the weight room and offices.

What happens at a Swing Club meeting?

Just for clarification: our meetings are essentially a lesson. These are especially good for people trying to learn the basics. Be sure to come every time, because you know what they say: if you don't use it, you lose it!

Calling all USA Swing Dancers!

Our first meeting is coming up fast! To start, we will discuss this year's plans. We need a handful of helpful and involved individuals to jump right in to help this club run smoothly this fall. We are looking for people to fill these leadership positions:

PR person (responsible for mass emailing students about up coming events)
Secretary
Treasurer
Social Events Committee (these people will help set up for dances, handle ID check/money collection, etc)
